The Shape of Blackness : Artists

Theko Boshomane

“We are more aware now more than ever that black excellence is an existing concept…our conscious awareness of the beauty of being black is not just a facade we wear but the life we live.”

Theko Boshomane was born in Polokwane, Limpopo. Theko has always been fascinated by creating art that is poetic. This interest was cultivated during his teenage years and further developed when he opted to take up a degree in Fine Arts at the Tshwane University of Technology.

After completing his B-tech in Fine Arts in 2012, Theko created artworks that were a representation of pain of being bullied in childhood. He explores the influence of those formative years in the way he finds himself interacting socially, spiritually, and emotionally in his adult years. Theko’s work has evolved into a self-healing process, an artistic exchange of hope between the artist and those who engage with it.

Theko has since participated in several exhibitions with galleries such as the Absa Art Gallery, Everard Read and the Pretoria Art Museum. In 2013, he entered the Absa L’Atelier art competition in which he exhibited in the top 100 artworks. In the same year, Theko was awarded a merit award in the Sasol New Signatures Art Competition.

Theko currently resides in Johannesburg, where he creates and exhibits his art ranging from drawings and paintings, to printmaking, videos, and installation.
